Deoxycholic acid is a molecule the body naturally uses to break down dietary fat; injected into a targeted fat pocket it ruptures the fat-cell membrane so the cell can no longer store fat. The destroyed cells are gradually cleared by the body and do not return.
How Belkyra dissolves fat
Treatment is a series of small injections across the target area, about 15–20 minutes per visit. Most patients need 2–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, depending on the amount of fat and the result desired. Mild swelling, tenderness or bruising for a few days is normal and is part of the fat-clearing process.

- During— topical numbing, then a grid of small injections; 15–20 minutes.
- After— expect swelling, tenderness or mild bruising for several days up to ~2 weeks; ice helps; you can return to normal activities the same day. Avoid heavy exercise for 24 h.
