Serious risks (rare but must be disclosed)
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)— Moderate risk, more common in Fitzpatrick III-IV patients without strict sun avoidance; Our physician significantly reduces this risk through low-energy protocols, shallow filters, and structured sun-protection guidance.
- Burns / blistering— Primarily seen with treatment in Fitzpatrick V-VI skin or recently tanned skin — the core reason IPL must be used with caution at these boundaries
- Hypopigmentation— Rare — usually associated with excessive energy or repeated treatment of the same area
- Scarring— Extremely rare; mostly seen with improper energy settings or picking at crystalline pigment flakes
- Infection— Rare; pay attention to post-care and sun protection
- Eye injury— Extremely rare (dedicated protective eyewear strictly required)
- Melasma worsening— IPL in Dermal / mixed-type melasma May trigger rebound, so IPL is not the first-line treatment for melasma
Absolute contraindication (do not treat)
- Fitzpatrick V-VI Very dark skin (burn-risk contraindication)
- Pregnancy / breastfeeding
- Skin still tanned / strong sun exposure within the past 4 weeks
- Active infection, open wounds, or active herpes simplex
- Oral Accutane / isotretinoin within the past 6 months
- Keloid / hypertrophic scar tendency
- Photosensitizing medications not discontinued
- Skin-involving autoimmune diseases (vitiligo, active lupus erythematosus)
- Dermal melasma (IPL is not first-line — PicoSure Pro is recommended instead)
